Chapter 97: Decaying Mole [Part 2]
Xavier paused, and so did Damien. The two of them exchanged a look with one another before Xavier unsheathed his sword and rushed in the direction from where the voices were coming from.
"AHHH!"
A man screamed in surprise as he tumbled on his bottom, his expression was that of sheer shock as he looked at Xavier and Damien.
"What—what do you think you are doing?" the man questioned while looking at the two.
"Who are you?" Xavier asked sharply. "What are you doing here?"
"I am an adventurer," replied the man while breathing heavily. "We are here to hunt a rare beast. What about you? Why are you swinging your sword wildly? You nearly killed me."
The man patted his chest while glaring at Xavier.
"We are adventurers as well," Damien answered. He decided that it was not a wise move to tell strangers that they were on their way to hunt a few members of the dark guild.
His words caused the four men to jump. One of them eyed Damien warily before saying, "Are you here to hunt that rare beast as well?"
Before Damien could even say that he wasn't, the man smacked his hands in frustration before exclaiming, "This is why I asked you all to hurry and pick the mission. Look at this now."
The other three men also seemed to be a bit annoyed, as if Damien had snatched the last bite of the cake that they had been saving for a while.
He wished he could tell them that he had no such intention.
"What kind of mission are you speaking of?" Xavier asked.
"Haven't you heard about the commission?" one of the men said to them. "The mission is to kill the boss of the rare beasts, and in exchange for it, we are going to get 2.3 million gold coins."
He paused and added, "You have heard about it, right?"
"Yes, we have." The man was so stupid that Damien felt bad about making him feel even more idiotic.
He glanced around at their small group before asking Xavier in a low voice, "Are they really not related to the dark guild ?"
What if these men were lying and luring them into a trap?
"I don't know," Xavier replied. His eyes were assessing the men in front of him as he said to Damien, "I have only seen Andres and not the rest of the guild members."
And since neither of them looked like Andres, Xavier couldn't know whether these people were the members of that dark guild.
Seeing the two men whispering among themselves, one of the adventurers said generously, "There is no need for you to feel bad. If you don't mind, then you can join our team; the reward price will naturally go down, but at least it's better than losing the entire thing."
The reason he suggested this was because the man knew that there was something different about the man who had swung his sword at him.
Xavier and Damien glanced at one another before Xavier said to him, "Let's follow them for a while. It's better to be safe than sorry."
They would be in bigger trouble if these people turned out to be the members of that dark guild.
"Alright," Damien turned to look at the adventures and nodded.
"I am Gary," said the red-haired man who was attacked by Xavier. With his hand held in front of him, he shook hands with Damien.
"I am Damien." With a light shake of his hands, Damien introduced himself.
He turned to look at the other adventurer, who smiled at him while eyeing him and Xavier warily.
"Willis," said the man on the far left.
"Tommy and this is Glen," Tommy pointed at the man with a long white hood.
"You are a healer," Xavier remarked, and Glen raised his head with a haughty smirk.
"That's right."
What was with the healers and their unexplained arrogance?
"You must be a warrior," said Glen while looking at Xavier. He turned to look at Damien before saying to him, "And I don't know who you are."
"I am a doctor," Damien replied when he saw the confusion on the faces of the adventurers. He explained, "I treat the injured and sickly."
"So, you are a healer," Gary said.
Damien shook his head before explaining, "No. I am not. I am a doctor."
"You treat the injured and sickly. What's the difference—"
"I don't use spells to treat anyone," stated Damien.
His words brought a sneer to Glen's lips as he turned to look at Willis and started whispering.
A second later, Damien heard Willis say, "Glen says that since you two will be relying on us from here on. We will take the bigger chunk of the price."
Damien arched a brow before questioning, "What if you all fail? Will my partner and I get the majority of the price?"
Glen must have taken his words as a joke because he laughed derisively.
"Of course if we fail then you can take the majority of the reward. That is if you can."
Glen smirked at Damien, who simply smiled at him before turning on his feet. He said to Xavier, "These idiots can never be part of the dark guild."
"Let's go," said Gary.
While Xavier hesitated before saying, "Let's wait a little."
Damien shrugged. He twisted around on the balls of his feet and followed the four men, who had already walked quite a distance.
"By the way," Damien began as he pushed a monstrous leaf away from his face. "What kind of rare beast are you hunting?"
"A Decaying Mole."
Gary turned to look at Damien before chuckling, "I know you must be surprised. We were just as surprised when we found out that the client behind this request wanted us to hunt a decaying mole. How can there be such a sweet deal?"
"Indeed," Damien narrowed his eyes as he called Dan, "Look into this decaying mole."
There was no way anyone would willingly hand out 2.3 million gold coins to kill a mole.
