Chapter 587: 586 I am your husband
When the nurse came in to change the water, she heard Mo Xiuchen reading a magazine to Wen Ran and an expression of surprise flashed across her face. Then she smiled and said, “Miss Wen, your husband is really good.”
Wen Ran looked at Mo Xiuchen with a smile but said nothing. He was also staring at her. Their gazes met, his eyes were as deep as the ocean, and hers revealed a faint hint of happiness. In her heart, a sense of sweetness overflowed.
“Nurse, wait a moment.”
As the nurse finished changing the water and was about to leave, Wen Ran called out to her.
“Miss Wen, is there anything else?”
The nurse turned around at her words and asked with a smile. Mo Xiuchen on the side was slightly surprised as well.
“Ranran, what’s the matter?”
His gaze towards Wen Ran immediately became full of concern.
Wen Ran gave Mo Xiuchen a reassuring smile and said to the nurse, “I want to use the bathroom, could you please help…”
“Ranran, I’ll help you.” Mo Xiuchen interrupted her before she could finish her sentence. He turned to the nurse, “You can go and attend to your work. We’ll call you if we need anything.”
“Alright!”
The nurse looked at him, then at Wen Ran. She had a touch of envy in her eyes as she turned and left the room.
Mo Xiuchen got up, picked up the drip bottle, and with one hand held up, offered his other hand to help Wen Ran, whose face was slightly blushing, “Ranran, I am your husband, you don’t need to be shy or polite with me.”
His words were gentle, but they also carried an inherent dominance which left Wen Ran with no room to refuse.
Looking into his deep eyes, Wen Ran let out a small sigh. She was not being polite to him but rather felt bad about making him, a grown man, have to do such things.
Although they had been incredibly intimate before, and he had even helped her clean up every time after they were done, the present situation was different.
Using the bathroom in front of him was something she felt uncomfortable doing.
The room was single occupancy, so there was no need to worry about anyone coming in, but Mo Xiuchen still went to the door and locked it before taking her into the bathroom.
“Xiuchen, hang the drip bottle here, and wait for me outside.”
In the bathroom, there was a hook on the wall, presumably for the convenience of patients needing to use the bathroom during their infusion.
“I’ll hold it.”
Mo Xiuchen’s gaze swept over the hook on the wall, but he didn’t hang the drip bottle there. Instead, he stood at the door, his tall figure blocking most of the entrance. He then asked with concern, “Can you take off your pants by yourself, or should I help you?”
At his question, Wen Ran’s white face immediately reddened. She averted her gaze from his deep eyes and shook her head, “No need, I can do it myself. Just… hang this up and wait for me outside. I’ll call you when I’m done.”
Mo Xiuchen gazed at her blushing face for a moment. Seeing that she was standing there motionless, as if she wouldn’t move until he left, he finally acquiesced to her request, “Alright, I’ll wait for you outside. Be careful and make sure not to get wet.”
Only when he had closed the door did Wen Ran let out a long sigh of relief.
With only one hand, she naturally wasn’t as efficient. Carefully, she undid her buttons, ignoring the hand attached to the IV. She had never realised how difficult it was to perform tasks with one hand. Now, she truly understood.

G City
Kangning Hospital
When Bai Xiaoxiao knocked on the door to Gu Kai’s office, he was sitting in his chair, lost in thought.
“Xiaoxiao, why are you here?”
It was only when she entered that he was drawn out of his thoughts. His deep eyes looked at her in surprise.
Bai Xiaoxiao gave a slight smile and explained softly, “I knocked, but there was no response, so I came in.”
Earlier, she had seen through the glass that Gu Kai was daydreaming in his office. Therefore, after knocking, she pushed open the door without waiting for his invitation to enter.
Gu Kai composed himself, a light smile blooming across his handsome face, “Ah Feng mentioned that you came looking for me yesterday, were you here for a re-examination?”
Bai Xiaoxiao nodded and replied, “Besides the re-check, I wanted to ask about Ranran’s situation over there. Has she had a check-up? What were the results?”
Just as Gu Kai was about to get up, Bai Xiaoxiao’s words made him pause. His eyes darkened, and he pursed his lips, “Not too good.”
Bai Xiaoxiao is Ranran’s best friend. Since she cared so much about Ranran, there was no need for him to hide anything from her.
He had been on the phone with his father, Gu Yan, in the middle of the night before. Gu Yan had told him about Wen Ran’s situation in detail. He did not sleep all night after the conversation.
During the day, he was in a daze at work, pushing back his surgeries because he was not in the mood. When Bai Xiaoxiao arrived, he had just returned from the second prison. After Wu Tianyi’s death, Xiao Wenqing had been sentenced to life imprisonment. He had just been to see Xiao Wenqing.
But the result was the same. Xiao Wenqing had no idea where Fu Jingyi was.
He called Wen Jin to ask how Lu Zhiyan’s investigation was progressing and whether there was any evidence of Qin Sen and Fu Jingyi conspiring. Wen Jin told him that he hadn’t been in contact with Lu Zhiyan for the past few days.
Bai Xiaoxiao’s face changed slightly as she asked anxiously, “What do you mean by ‘not too good’? During Ranran’s last check-up, wasn’t it said that her condition had improved somewhat?”
She did not understand the professional jargon and didn’t know how Fu Jingyi had managed to plant a virus inside Ranran that only revealed its effects after more than a decade.
All she wanted was for Ranran to be fine. The Gu family was a century-old medical family and both Gu Kai and Gu Yan were excellent doctors, she didn’t believe that they were unable to cure Ranran’s ‘disease’.
Gu Kai looked at Bai Xiaoxiao, feeling rather deflated as he sat back down.
By now, Bai Xiaoxiao was already in front of his desk, her hands supporting her on its surface. Her eyes were intently watching him, “Gu Kai, hasn’t Director Gu been trying his best? Wasn’t it said that the field of medicine in D country is more advanced than here? It hasn’t been long since Ranran’s last check-up, even if her condition isn’t good, it couldn’t have gotten that much worse, could it?”
She asked several questions in a row, each one making Gu Kai’s face turn a shade darker. His eyes were dark and unfathomable, and his thin lips were tinged with self-mockery.
Yeah, he used to think he was amazing, a medical genius. He could effortlessly complete surgeries that others couldn’t, and patients that other hospitals couldn’t save, Shan Kangning Hospital could.
But now, he couldn’t even save his own sister. He had to watch his long-lost sister suffer, watch his best friend suffer…
He had never felt as useless as he did now!
The office was silent to the point of suffocation.
After waiting for Gu Kai’s response for a long time, Bai Xiaoxiao was filled with dread. Ignoring the sour feeling in her nose, she looked at the silent Gu Kai and gently asked, “Then, when will Ranran come back?”
