Chapter 857: Chapter 858: A Heavyweight Appearance
The Enforcement Team’s branch was teeming with people.
Located atop a mountain, over ten black-robed cultivators hovered in the air, guiding the crowd to register in an orderly fashion.
“The cultivators from the Enforcement Team are as expected—each one’s Sin Value isn’t less than a hundred thousand. It seems they haven’t been idle in punishing the wicked and eliminating evil!”
“Yes, but I’ve heard that the Enforcement Team only executes murderers on the spot if they are truly deranged. The lesser offenders are typically captured and imprisoned.”
“Even so, killings are inevitable on a regular basis. I see that almost every cultivator here today is riddled with Sin Value. The one with the most actually has a Sin Value of one hundred and fifty thousand and has even made it onto the List of Villains. I really wonder which Sect’s young prodigy he is, to possess such a high Sin Value and still manage to avoid the Enforcement Team’s pursuit to get here. It’s truly remarkable!”
“Alas, who knows what this year’s examination will look like. I hope the test will be simpler. My Sin Value is too high; I can’t clean it off anymore. If I fail to get registered with the Enforcement Team, I fear the rest of my life will be spent in their prison.”
“Indeed, the competition for spots every year is brutal, and in the end, it’s likely to end in a bloodbath. Let’s leave it to fate.”
The cultivators looked around, their eyes filled with anxious trepidation.
Most of them were young disciples from various Sects, with cultivation levels not too profound, ranging from the Human Immortal Realm to the Earth Immortal Realm. It goes without saying for the Loose Cultivators who, without the same resources as Sect Disciples, have even more limited strength.
It was best to register with the Enforcement Team early. After all, only with the worry of Sin Value gone can one cultivate in peace, otherwise constantly fearing the Enforcement Team’s sudden appearance is no way to live. Therefore, those with truly profound cultivation levels had registered with the Enforcement Team long ago. There are also those with unique actions who dislike forming ties and would rather face endless pursuit with tremendous Sin Value than join an organization. However, such individuals are often significant powers unto themselves. As long as they don’t harm the common folk, the Enforcement Team won’t launch a large-scale hunt against them.
“Just a bunch of rookies, all naively thinking having a Sin Value is something cool. Little do they know, there’s a lot more to it than they understand!”
In the void, several Enforcement Team cultivators watched the excited and nervous crowd below, their eyes flashing with a hint of disdain.
These rookies know nothing. They join the Enforcement Team either to avoid arrest or to wield the team’s reputation in continuing to accumulate Sin Value and become feared demon heads, completely ignorant of the team’s true purpose.
But even they are not core cultivators and likewise don’t have access to much inside information. Still, with years of experience, they could guess some things.
“Wang Yan, I remember when you first joined the Enforcement Team, you were even more scared than they are now. You were practically scared out of your pants, weren’t you?”
A female cultivator with an older sister vibe teased, provoking laughter from the crowd.
“That was different. Who would have thought they’d send us Human Immortal Realm and newly advanced Earth Immortal Realm cultivators to hunt down Old Demon Han with half a million in Sin Value? Compared to that horrific examination, just surviving is enough to be proud of!”n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
The cultivator named Wang Yan snorted coldly.
“That’s true. Compared to our time, the current Enforcement Team examinations are practically heaven. What a pity that the overall quality of cultivators is declining more and more each year. Even with the significantly reduced difficulty, every year at least half fail to make the cut. I wonder if this year there will be any newcomers who manage to stand out.”
Upon hearing this, several people nodded in agreement. To recruit more cultivators into the Enforcement Team, the Helmsman had reduced the difficulty of the examination a lot, especially this year. In their view, the examination was almost too easy and enjoyable.
While everyone was happily chatting, a roar came from the distance, growing louder as it approached. It seemed as if a massive object was rapidly nearing, causing the ground to start trembling slightly.
After sensing this terrifying aura, everyone from the Enforcement Team and the cultivators below were struck with fear, unconsciously stepping back as this unknown presence instinctively aroused a sense of dread within their hearts!
“What’s happening, is there a Demonic Beast attacking?”
“Or has the examination already begun, and that terrifying entity in the distance is our objective for this mission?”
“Can’t be, right? That thing is causing such a commotion. How could possibly we contend with it?”
“No, that’s not a Demonic Beast. That’s a person. Look closely, there are many figures within the dust!”
After a moment of shock, one of the cultivators reacted, pointing towards the distant dust and shouting with a sharp voice.
The crowd followed the sound, and what the disciple said was true. There were now over a hundred figures within the dust with a young man at the forefront holding a longsword, standing atop an ancient golden war chariot whose wheels thundered along, creating the tremendous uproar they had heard. The synchronized footsteps of the hundred cultivators behind him drummed the earth, resonating with an awe-inspiring might.
Which power was this coming from?
Were they here to cause trouble for the Enforcement Team?
As they drew nearer, the shock in their hearts intensified. The young man drove the war chariot directly into the crowd, coming to a stop. This group of people had actually come to participate in the Enforcement Team examination!
The golden war chariot exuded a wild aura, resembling a fierce beast ready to pounce, its body adorned with the limbs and severed parts of various Demonic Beasts. The rolling wheels left behind twin streaks of blood, striking a harrowing sight, and above the head of the young man holding the longsword hovered a blood-red Sin Value: 200,000!
Among the cultivators they had encountered before, the highest Sin Value had only been 150,000. And yet, this guy was even stronger, with a Sin Value of 200,000, and the fact that he had not been captured by the Enforcement Team was nothing short of miraculous. Moreover, attending the examination with an entire team in tow was unheard of.
“We’ve finally arrived. It seems we’re just in time and haven’t missed the deadline.” Xiaobai scanned his surroundings and nodded in satisfaction, “The straight path between two points is indeed the shortest. The ancients never lied!”
“Haha, didn’t I say? Stick with the boss, and we can just barrel through straight on. Nothing can stop us!”
“Yeah, who would have thought the boss, just like us, was here to take part in the Enforcement Team’s examination? It’s destiny!”
“That’s life for you; stick with the boss, and there’s meat to eat!”
“I’ll admit my choice had a bit of a gamble in it, but as it turns out, I bet on the right horse. The boss is awesome!”
Laughter erupted unrestrainedly from the ranks behind the war chariot, and for some unknown reason, running wildly with Li Xiaobai seemed to have unleashed their long-suppressed emotions all at once, rekindling the youthful vigor of their days aspiring to shatter the heavens with their fists.
Holding his sword in his embrace, Li Xiaobai looked up at the enforcement team cultivators who were still in a state of shock and said, “I am Li Xiaobai, Peak Master of the Sword Sect’s Second Peak, bringing with me a letter from the Deputy Helmsman Wu Chengjue to take part in the Enforcement Team examination. I hope that you all can grant us some convenience.”
