Chapter 919 Missing Slaves
Unerolia sat forward in her chair and I could see her grip tighten on the armrest while she fought to maintain that look of a proper lady.
"What do you mean by that? How did so many of our slaves go missing? Why was I not informed of this?"
The Julian guy hesitated again before turning to the slaves and made a shooing motion.
All of them understood and filed out of the room without complaint, though I wonder how they were dealing with this since it was their own colleagues that had gone missing and they were also at risk of it.
He waited until the door had shut before turning back to the Marchioness.
"At first, we thought it was just runaway slaves since the ones that went missing are criminal slaves."
Unerolia nodded, "Yes, I am aware of that. I believe that it was reported that there was a pending investigation and hunters have been deployed to search for them?"
"That is correct, Mistress… But there have been no results so far. The thirty slaves that went missing was the first instance where non criminal slaves had gone missing and in large numbers at the same time."
"Where were they last seen?"
"Back in the Slave's Share House, Mistress."
"And these slaves were voluntary slaves?"

"That is correct, Mistress. There were a few that had even chosen to be sex slaves and a couple that had sold themselves to get themselves out of trouble so I do not believe any of them would be the type to run away."
Unerolia frowned and thought for a moment, "In that case… Then it really might be someone who is going around kidnapping slaves then. Do we have any leads?"
He shook his head, "Unfortunately not, Mistress… It's as if all of them just disappeared into thin air. There were no signs of a break in at the Slave's Share House and the guards did not hear or see anything out of place that night."
"What about the slaves? Was there anything special about them?"
The man thought for a moment, "I suppose… The fact that all of the slaves that were taken were either females or futas might be something worthy of note?"
The Marchioness went silent again before nodding at him, "Understood, you can leave now."
The Julian guy eyed us for a moment before bowing and leaving the room, shutting the door with a click.
Unerolia sighed before turning towards us, "Madam Nilm…"
Mother giggled, "Ara, ara~ Is little Une asking for help from the Nilm Family?"n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
The Marchioness hesitated, "I… I will need to get more information first. Is it alright to return us to the manor first? I need to check what Esmeral knows about this."
Mother stood up from her seat, prompting me to do the same as well.
"Of course, Mary?"
The Trasif maid stepped forward and created a portal in front of her, almost as if she had already expected Mother to ask this from the start.
Unerolia also stood up and stepped through the portal without hesitation, prompting the rest of us to follow behind her.
The portal led us to the manor's office and Unerolia quickly called out to her personal maid, "Esmeral! In my office now!"
She sat down at the desk while we took our seat on the couch near the wall, waiting for about a minute before there was a knock on the door signaling Unerolia's slave maid's arrival.
"Mistress? You called for me?"
"Come in."
The secretary looking woman stepped inside, not even looking surprised that we somehow had returned to the manor without going through the front door.
Unerolia wasn't wasting time and immediately asked the slave girl, "What is this that I heard about slaves going missing in the city?"
Esmeral tilted her head slightly, "Wasn't this already reported to you, Mistress? We have said that the hunters have been deployed to search for them."
"What about the thirty voluntary slaves that disappeared? The ones that belong to the Asttol Grand Slave Market?"
"That was mentioned in yesterday's report, Mistress. The ones that you have yet to go through right there at the corner of the table, Mistress…"
"... Oh…"
Mother giggled, "Ara, ara~ Does this call for another round of punishment, little Une?"
Unerolia panicked, "Wait! That's not fair! You can't count this, Madam Nilm! These were special circumstances!"
"Ufufufu~ In that case, what are you waiting for?"
Unerolia quickly picked up the files at the edge of the table and started flipping through them quickly.
I leaned over to Mother and whispered, "Does Mommy already know about this?"
"Ufufufu~ Perhaps~ Is my little one suspecting that an Off-Worlder might be involved in this?"
I nodded slightly, "Back then I did meet an Off-Worlder who was going around freeing slaves without knowing how slavery works in this World and thought he was some kind of saint for doing that. He ended up freeing criminal slaves and they made use of him to rob others…"
"Ufufufu~ Unfortunately, we aren't sure if an Off-Worlder is involved but I believe we do know about this situation~ Does my little one wish to help little Une?"
"Umm… I mean if this was caused by Off-Worlders, I would like to help her with that… And also shouldn't we help her considering that she's Sister Justy's cousin?"
"Ara, ara? We are not obligated to help in such things, my little one~ Especially since this city is under her jurisdiction after all~ She could make an official request to us for help and it would be up to us to choose whether we wish to help her or not, my little one~"
I see…
At that moment, a thump came from Unerolia's table as she tossed the folder aside and growled, "Whoever is doing this is really good… Are there really no leads at all?"
Esmeral shook her head, "None that the hunters and the guards have reported. As it's stated in the report, it's almost like they just vanished into thin air. We suspect that the perpetrator might be proficient in Astromancy and teleported the slaves out from their locations."
"But in order to do that, they must have been inside the Share House at least once! But only slaves are allowed to enter that building so was this person a slave? Could they have a grudge against us and right now they are gathering other slaves that might also want to overthrow this city and take over control?"
Esmeral shook her head, "I do not believe that's the case, Mistress. There were no records of slaves that have that high level of Astromancy that have entered the Share House."
"Then how else were they able to steal away so many of our slaves without anyone noticing?"
"We do not know, Mistress. The investigation is still ongoing."
Unerolia turned to us, "Madam Nilm… I am formally requesting for aid from the Nilm Family to help us find the missing slaves and to deal with the culprit of this…"
Mother giggled, "Ufufufu~ In that case, can the Nilm Family expect some form of payment if we were to accept this request."
Unerolia turned back to Esmeral, "Can… Can our budget afford it?"
The slave girl gave her mistress a pointed look, "Mistress… You still have the repairs from the spar with the Mercenaries that you have yet to pay. We are already in the red this month, Mistress."
Mother then cut in, "Fufufu~ There's other ways of payment that we would accept aside from just Creas~"
The Marchioness gulped, "What… What other ways can I pay the Nilm Family to receive this service?"
"Ufufufu~ That's simple isn't it? A service for a service~ A favour for a favour~ How about that?"
"Is Madam Nilm saying that… As long as I agree to owe the Nilm Family a favour, I would receive aid for this?"
"Ufufufu~ That's right~ A favour that any member of the Nilm Family can request at any time and you are unable to refuse~"
Unerolia's eyes immediately shifted to me and I'm also guessing that Mother was doing this so that I might be able to benefit from this in the future. Probably in case I needed help in this area, I could find Unerolia to cash in on this favour.
"In that case, I accept the conditions!" The Marchioness replied enthusiastically.
Mother then turned behind her, "Mary?"
The Trasif maid stepped forward with a slight bow, "Madam… Here."
She then presented a folder that she pulled out from behind her and handed it over to Mother.
Mother took the folder from her and flipped it open, prompting me to peek over her shoulder to look at its contents.
There were pictures of several girls whom I assume were the slaves that were missing and beside them was a map of the area around the city with a specific part that was circled in red with a dotted line leading from the city to the circle.
Right in the corner of the folder was also a picture of what looked like a hooded man with his facial features obscured in shadow with a big arrow pointing to him indicating he was the culprit.
Seriously? You guys already practically have all the information about this! When did you guys even find out about this?!
What do you think?
